Gumbaynggirr artwork EOI for Coffs Harbour Health Campus

Coffs Harbour Health Campus (CHHC) is seeking three Gumbaynggirr artists to create culturally significant artworks for the paediatric and intensive care units.

Each artwork will be accompanied by Gumbaynggirr language and cultural interpretation, fostering a space of respect, kindness, hope, and cultural safety for children, families, and the broader community. Artists will have the opportunity to express connection to Country through art, language, and storytelling—reflecting the deep cultural significance of Gumbaynggirr homelands, including native animals, waterways, skies, and other key elements.

Importantly, these works will also acknowledge and support sorry business, helping create a space of grief, healing, and cultural respect for children, families, and communities.

Through these artworks, CHHC aims to promote spirituality, strength, and connection, supporting children’s health journeys with comfort and cultural care.

To create a culturally safe and respectful environment where all children feel protected, resilient, and
connected to Gumbaynggirr Country.

Where the artwork will be displayed

• Paediatric Unit: Family room and main corridor, linking the palliative care area to the central
• Intensive Care Unit: A mural in a patient bedspace for children, adults, and kin.

Design guidelines

Designs may include

• A night sky ceiling, acknowledging the spiritual journey to the Dreaming.
• Ocean-themed murals with culturally significant animals and symbols.
• A Gumbaynggirr language message, with English translation, affirming the space as culturally safe and caring.

Eligibility and application

• Gumbaynggirr artists submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) must be over 18 years of age.
• The submission will follow a competition format.
• Artists must be from Gumbaynggirr Country.
• Applications close 31 October 2025.
• Fee will be up to $20,000 for the commissioned artworks.
• An agreement will be finalised with successful artist.
