Bellingen gala event celebrates hospital’s 120 years

Jan 31, 2024

The Bellingen community is dusting off their finest outfits to celebrate an important milestone – 120 years of the Bellinger River District Hospital.

A gala event on Saturday, 16 March, will bring the community together to reminisce about the invaluable service the hospital has provided since 1904. For many, it’s where they were born, where loved ones were farewelled, and for others, their lives were saved.

“The celebration is an opportunity to reflect on our history, how far we’ve come, and the many people who have a connection to the hospital,” Executive Officer and Director of Nursing Lisa Slater said.

“It began as a training hospital and fostered innovation as one of the first hospitals in Australia to use x-rays and adopt a hospital contribution scheme.

“The original building contained wards housing four men and two women. Today, the facility has a 24-hour ED and a range of specialist services, including emergency medicine, general medicine, day surgery, rehabilitation, and palliative care.”

In celebrating 120 years of the hospital, many stories from history will be shared and displayed. Vital funds will be raised on the night through an auction of items donated by local businesses.

The 120th celebration will be held at Cedar Bar and Kitchen, 8 Church Street Bellingen, from 5pm.

Tickets are $69 per person, including canapés, a grazing table, a standing main, dessert, and live entertainment. Drinks can be purchased on the night.

Tickets are available for purchase via Humanitix. Sales close 4 March.
