A Mid North Coast Local Health District mental health nurse has been named a finalist in the inaugural National Rural and Remote Health Awards.

Claire Borg, who is the Acting Nurse Unit Manager at Kempsey District Hospital’s Inpatient Unit, is one of just five finalists in the Rising Star category.

Supported by Rural Health Pro, the awards recognise exceptional early career professionals who have worked to improve health in rural and remote areas.

Coffs Harbour Acute Mental Health Unit NUM Jessica McEvoy said the finalist announcement was recognition in itself of Ms Borg’s inspirational leadership in supporting the delivery of mental health care at Kempsey.

“Claire is a rising star in her first tenure as a Nurse Manager of a Mental Health Unit,” Ms McEvoy said.

“She has supported connections with the Dunghutti community and has assisted in redefining service delivery to be culturally safe.

“Claire has shown great autonomy and, in such a short time, has innovatively redesigned the service and supported staff wellbeing by listening to the community’s needs and providing a welcoming healing space.”

Ms Borg collaborated with Dunghutti Elders to create a plan to redesign the Kempsey Mental Health Unit.

“It is a more welcoming and a safer space for healing for Aboriginal consumers,” Ms McEvoy said.

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra, on 13 November.
