Hospital volunteers bring friends together for fundraiser

About 60 people attended Wauchope Hospital Volunteers’ annual Friendship Luncheon this week.

Wauchope RSL Club kindly hosted the get-together, attended by about 60 supporters from throughout the Hastings and beyond, including United Hospital volunteers from Kempsey and Camden Haven branches.

The luncheon was an opportunity for Wauchope District Memorial Hospital Executive Officer/Director of Nursing Wayne Southern to thank the volunteers for their service and support and to thank the broader community for always getting behind the group’s fundraising activities.

Funds raised by the volunteers are used to purchase medical equipment or patient comfort items for the hospital.

‘We have recently been gifted a shade sail for our outdoor garden, used by our rehabilitation patients,” Mr Southern said.

“We were also gifted a desk in our pre-admission clinic, which assists with our surgical bookings.

“I take this opportunity, on behalf of our patients, to say thank you for your sustained and ongoing service and contribution.

“On behalf of our staff, I thank you.

“As the facility manager of Wauchope hospital, I appreciate you, and thank you for your marvellous contribution to our patients and hospital, your sense of humour, and your tenacity, fully refusing to be dissuaded from the cause by a worldwide pandemic. You continue to stand strong.

“I truly appreciate the ability to be here today and to celebrate with you.”

Three Wauchope Hospital Volunteers were also recognised for their service – Joan Eagan received her 25-year certificate from Mr Southern, who also presented 10-year service awards to Barry and Carole Peters. A special mention went to 93-year-old Hilda Saunders, who still pots and propagates plants for the monthly volunteer stalls at IGA.
