RSL club behind innovative cancer care device
Nov 02, 2021Macksville District Hospital has a new tool in its kit to help locals diagnosed with breast cancer.
Nambucca RSL Club has donated a $12,400 SOZO machine to Community Health. The device provides non-invasive fluid and tissue analysis in cancer patients.
McGrath Breast Care Nurse Carolyn Cross said the medical device detects lymphoedema, or fluid build-up that leads to the distressing health condition, within seconds and without the need for invasive procedures.
Maintaining tissue fluid balance was essential for all people, but this balance is sometimes compromised for survivors of many types of cancer, particularly breast cancer, where patients have a high risk of developing clinical lymphoedema.
“The SOZO helps us to detect and monitor fluid accumulation at the earliest possible stage. Early detection means earlier intervention for the management of Lymphoedema and better health outcomes for our patients,” Ms Cross said.
“We are very grateful to Nambucca RSL Club for donating this device, which really is a gamechanger for local breast cancer patients.
“The device provides an unprecedented level of information and data, without the need for invasive procedures.
“We feel so privileged and fortunate to have this amazing device thanks to Nambucca RSL Club.”
Nambucca RSL Chief Executive Officer Wendy Mills said she was delighted to make the presentation on behalf of the club and its members.
“This latest donation is another example of the club supporting our local community,” Ms Mills said.
“It keeps our money local and we know it makes a huge difference in our community.
“Supporting our local community is what we do best.”
