Health team present on world stage
Aug 11, 2023Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Health Promotion staff recently attended the prestigious 2023 International Society for Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) Conference.
Hosted in Uppsala, Sweden, the conference featured over 1300 delegates from 47 countries, with over 1000 conference papers and posters submitted.
The mission of the ISBNPA is to “stimulate and promote innovative and impactful research in behavioural nutrition and physical activity to improve human health and well-being worldwide”.
Health Promotion Coordinator, Teisha Schirmer presented her poster on evaluating and translating the Kilometre Club program.
Kilometre Club is a primary school-based program established on the Mid North Coast, which aims to increase students’ physical activity levels by completing an outside walk or run at school.
Teisha said it was an honour to attend the conference.
“I definitely felt proud, excited and grateful to present our community-driven regional research at a world-renowned conference, particularly as the 2023 event received record-breaking submissions and the biggest attendance in history,” she said.
“Walking into the open ceremony in the oldest University in Sweden, among 1300 international researchers … that was pretty surreal.”
Health Promotion Officer, Richard Ball, also presented some of the findings from his PhD, which focuses on social media and website-supported child feeding intervention to improve feeding practices and children’s diet quality.
His PhD research, which is part of the Parents in Child Nutrition Informing Community (PICNIC) Project, has demonstrated a significant improvement in parent feeding practices and children’s diet quality.
While in Sweden, Richard and Teisha also visited the Karolinska Institute to meet with the Swedish PICNIC team to plan for the upcoming PICNIC in Sweden pilot study.
This opportunity enabled further partnership and collaborations with the IMPACT multidisciplinary research group led by Professor Marie Löf, including partners from Deakin and Wollongong Universities.
