Guiding the next cohort of nurses
Jul 19, 2023In a bid to elevate the quality of care and enhance professional growth opportunities for nurses and midwives, the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) has launched the Preceptor Pathway.
The Preceptor Pathway is designed to support and empower nurses and midwives in their journey towards excellence, offering a structured and dynamic program aimed at fostering growth, expanding knowledge and achieving recognition within the district.
It serves as a valuable resource, elevating the quality of preceptorship and contributing to the overall enhancement of patient care outcomes.
A nurse preceptor is an experienced and competent nurse formally assigned to guide the professional journey of students, graduate or newly employed nurses and midwives.
Second year Registered Nurse, Kaitlin Largent, emphasised the importance of the program.
“I believe having the Preceptor Pathway available for both experienced individuals looking to share their knowledge and to those who are undertaking new roles would greatly benefit quality improvement within our role as nurses and midwives,” she said.
“As a second year Registered Nurse, I am lucky to have had the opportunity to make numerous positive relationships with professionals whom I work alongside.”
“These experienced professionals have grown to be like-minded individuals sharing similar passions in providing healthcare. They have guided me throughout my journey as a newly Registered Nurse and assisted me in achieving my career aspirations by sharing both their passions and knowledge.”
The Preceptor Pathway equips nurses and midwives with the necessary tools, resources, and support to effectively guide and precept their colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth throughout their department/facility.
Through online learning modules, interactive workshops, and ongoing guidance, participants gain invaluable insights and strategies for preceptorship excellence.
“Overall, I have developed amazing relationships that have allowed me to continue to grow and achieve my career aspirations in the nursing field,” Kaitlin said.
“Personally, I am very much looking forward to involving myself in these developmental learning pathways in the future.”
The program’s benefits extend beyond individual professional development, as successful completion of the Preceptor Pathway offers participants district-wide recognition as highly skilled and respected preceptors.
This recognition not only enhances career prospects but also contributes to the overall elevation of the quality of care throughout the MNCLHD.
As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting staff engagement, the MNCLHD encourages all nurses and midwives to actively participate in the Preceptor Pathway.
