Healthy Canteens

The school canteen plays an important role at school, supporting and role modelling positive nutrition messages from the classroom and supplying nutritious ‘fuel’ to enable students to learn. Healthy canteens encourage students to make positive food choices, and develop good eating habits that can be carried on throughout life.

The NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy requires school canteens to offer a range of healthy food and drinks which are consistent with curriculum messages and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.

Foods that are high in saturated fat, added sugar and/or salt and low in nutritional value can only be sold on two days per term. Support is available to assist canteens follow the guidelines for NSW School Canteens.

In NSW Public Schools, the Nutrition In Schools Policy states that “any activities and programs within the school setting relating to or involving food and drink should promote healthy eating and good nutrition to students”.

This makes teaching healthy habits and supporting healthy eating not just about the school canteen, but a whole-school responsibility.

Parents and school canteen coordinators and committees can access information about healthy school canteen menus, as below.
