The first Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service – or Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) – was established by the local Aboriginal community in Redfern in July 1971. It was established principally to address the discrimination experienced by Aboriginal people in mainstream services; the ill health and premature deaths of Aboriginal people; and the need for culturally appropriate and accessible health services. Since then the number of AMSs have expanded in order to address Aboriginal health needs throughout the country.
Mid North Coast Local Health District has a formal Aboriginal Health Partnership Agreement with the AMSs in the Mid North Coast region including Galambila Aboriginal Health Service Inc, Durri Aboriginal Corporation Medical Service and Werin Aboriginal Corporation.
Aboriginal Medical Services provide a range of services from GP and primary health related services.
