One of Australia’s most prestigious game fishing competitions has landed an impressive donation in support of local cancer patients.
Port Macquarie Game Fishing Club’s annual Golden Lure Tournament features a charity day in memory of much-loved fishers Tammy and Richard Kirkby.
Proceeds from the event are donated every year to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at Port Macquarie, with this year’s donation weighing in at $2500. The donation brings the club’s support for the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute to more than $11,000 in the past four years, with every cent helping local cancer patients.
Club president Janeck Kaczorowski and Treasurer Jarrad McIlveen presented the generous gift to Nursing Unit Manager Jenny Baroutis at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute this week.
Ms Baroutis thanked the game fishing club for its tremendous support over many years.
“The Golden Lure is one of the oldest deep-sea fishing tournaments in Australia,” Ms Baroutis said.
“It’s a fantastic boost to tourism for our town, it’s a fabulous fishing tournament attracting competitors from all over Australia and, with all the organising that is necessary to ensure the success of such an event, the club still focuses on its charity day to deliver tangible support to local cancer patients.
“We are grateful for their generosity, their ongoing support and their determination to ensure the memory of Tammy and Richard Kirkby lives on.”
Mr Kaczorowski said the donations each year are mostly funded by the Tammy and Richard Kirkby Memorial Ladies and Junior Charity Day, when boat crews pay a $50 donation to enter.
“The day is all about having fun and enjoying the fishing and, as such, each year the day sees a lot of first-time anglers catch, and in most cases release, their first marlin.
“Along with the boat money we have many sponsors, who we are grateful to, that donate the prizes, such as Jon’s Family Jewellers who do up great prizes for the ladies and BCF who help look after the juniors.
“We also have local accommodation places donate packages that we auction at the presentation event.
“It is definitely a group effort from the anglers, boat owners and sponsors that allows such a generous donation to be achieved each year,” Mr Kaczorowski said.
