Work and life is a balancing act: Schwartz Rounds discussion
Oct 04, 2023The Schwartz Rounds Leadership Group discussed work-life balance with a difference at its latest event on 26 September 2023.
Hosted by Port Macquarie Base Hospital, the theme was ‘A balancing act – how do we maintain work-life balance’. On the panel were Bruce Blackbell – RN/Assistant Chaplain; Nicole Mat – Senior Physiotherapist; Rachel Hathaway – Speech Pathologist; and Taresa Rosten – Director, People and Culture.
Each panellist shared a story about their busy, active lives and how they managed to maintain a work-life balance.
Each panellist spoke of ‘a moment’ which caused them to reflect on what was important to them. They also spoke about the importance of connecting with family and friends and taking time for physical exercise, whether it’s a gym workout or a walk along a beach.
At the end of the round, the panellists were presented with a Certificate of Acknowledgement to recognise their important part in making the event a success.
Schwartz Rounds are a type of structured group forum where clinical and non-clinical employees meet regularly to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare.
Schwartz Rounds provide an opportunity to take ‘time out’ to reflect on work in a safe, collegial, compassionate space. Unlike other initiatives, such as group reflective practice or clinical supervision, the purpose is not to solve problems or focus on the clinical aspects of patient care.
The next Schwartz Rounds is scheduled for 22 November 2023 at Coffs Harbour Health Campus.
