Wear red to say “no” to violence on 19 May
May 18, 2021Mid North Coast residents are encouraged to wear red on Wednesday 19 May to say no to violence in all relationships as part of the annual Seeing RED campaign.
The campaign is an initiative of the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) in collaboration with local domestic violence services and NSW Police through the Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Port Macquarie local area commands.
Individuals, services, businesses and community groups are invited to wear a splash of red to show their solidarity to STOP Violence, take a photo and share it on social media with the hashtag #seeingred.
The campaign is about visibility, with the colour red used as a conversation starter to raise awareness about the prevalence of violence, remove myths and stop victim blaming.
MNCLHD Domestic Violence Prevention Educator Renee Bell said the Seeing RED campaign provided an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity and support to those who have experienced violence, been victimised, silenced or shamed.
“Whether you’re working from home or in the workplace on 19 May, share a photo of yourself or your team wearing red to show the local community that you demand a world without violence,” Ms Bell said.
“Get inspired, wear a red shirt, scarf, lipstick, nail polish or wristband, or do something different with some flowers or food. Get your team together for an online meeting and share a screenshot with the hashtag #seeingred.”
Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services will co-host a Seeing Red Facebook event to bring the community together virtually on the day and provide a platform to share information and resources on how to recognise and respond safely to domestic and family violence.
Seeing RED is an initiative of MNCLHD in collaboration with the Mid North Coast (MNC) Steering Committee for Staying Home Leaving Violence, IDFVS, Men’s Behaviour Change and Fixed Address. The Committee includes Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services, Kempsey Families Inc, Warrina Domestic and Family Specialist Services, MNCLHD, Department of Communities and Justice and NSW Police.
