Wauchope Hospital Volunteers thank Win and welcome Barry

Aug 07, 2024

Wauchope Hospital Volunteers, a branch of the United Hospital Auxiliaries (UHA) of NSW, held its annual general meeting this week, reflecting on a busy and successful year of fundraising for Wauchope District Memorial Hospital.

Their efforts, including selling knitwear, plants, raffle tickets, and sausage and steak sandwiches, have significantly contributed to the hospital’s resources.

This meeting also marked the end of an era with the retirement of Win Secombe OAM, affectionately known as the “Queen of Wauchope,” who stepped down as president after seven years of dedicated service in the executive leadership role.

Sharon Fuller of the Mid North Coast Local Health District said Win had been an integral part of the Wauchope community for 64 years, including 26 years as a hospital volunteer following her retirement as a nurse.

“In recognition of her outstanding service, Win received the UHA’s highest honour, Life Membership, in 2020. Her passionate commitment and contributions have left a lasting legacy.

“Thank you, Win, for your remarkable service!”

Stepping into the role of president for 2024-25 is long-time volunteer Barry Peters, supported by his wife Carole Peters as Secretary. Vice-president is Susan Vogel, the hardworking Margaret Mostyn will continue as Treasurer, and Liz McKellar will take on the role of Publicity Officer.

This past year, the Wauchope Hospital Volunteers made several generous donations to the hospital, including:

  • 18 care packages for patients arriving without toiletries
  • 20 Easter goodwill packs
  • A medication trolley
  • Two urology analysers

“These contributions are vital in enhancing patient care and ensuring that those in need receive essential support,” Ms Fuller said.

Also attending the Annual General Meeting was Nurse Manager Kate Williams, who thanked the volunteers for their ongoing support, and the UHA’s North East Regional Representative Dee Hunter.

The Hospital Volunteers are now preparing for the Wauchope Volunteers Day on 10 August at Wauchope Showground, where they hope to recruit new members and will celebrate their 80th birthday at a special luncheon at Wauchope RSL Club on 10 September.

They are appealing to the community for stories and photos of Wauchope Hospital to be exhibited at the birthday luncheon. Stories and photos can be emailed to thewanderers1@live.com.au.
