Fitting farewell to a dedicated nurse: Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery Donna Kennedy with Margaret Kelly who will be sorely missed by patients and colleagues.

Splashes of colour and fun at Kempsey for nurses and midwives

May 15, 2024

Kempsey District Hospital marked International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife with a sense of fun, competition and recognition.

Colleagues, visitors and patients enjoyed the photo display and seeing nurses and midwives express their artistic side on crazy hair and sock day.

Breakfast toasties kicked off one of the days in a delicious way which were then burned off thanks to the Nursing Olympics, before calming down in a bodywork and mindfulness session.

As part of the celebrations, KDH paid tribute to Margaret Kelly who was most recently employed as part of the COVID surge workforce as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA). Personal Care Assistants have now ceased for the MNCLHD and hence Ms Kelly’s time at KDH has ended.

Ms Kelly came out of nursing retirement into the PCA role and provided support and mentorship to staff, kept IPU stocked, clean and tidy, and provided invaluable companionship and emotional support to our most vulnerable patients.

Before her employment as a PCA, Ms Kelly was employed as a Registered Nurse in the Perioperative Department and was committed to providing excellence.

She was recognised for her significant contribution to nursing and will be sorely missed by all.

Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Donna Kennedy, said nurses and midwives are the heart and soul of the healthcare system.

“They are advocates for our patients, providing support, comfort and guidance throughout their healthcare journey,” Ms Kennedy said.

“Whether holding a patient’s hand during a difficult moment or providing life-saving treatment in the emergency department, nurses and midwives make a profound difference in the lives of those they care for.

“To all of our nurses and midwives, we extend our deepest gratitude and admiration and thank you for your contribution to our profession.”
