Palliative care bed invaluable for patients and staff

The Macleay community continues to support their hospital, thanks to the phenomenal work of volunteers.

Recently, a cheque was presented to Kempsey District Hospital to purchase a palliative care bed valued at $13,000.

The Nurse Unit Manager for In-patient / Rehabilitation and Assessment units, Kate Martin, said the bed is an invaluable resource for patients and staff.

“This bed has extra comfort features and technology on board, such as movement sensors that alert us when a patient is trying to get out of bed and needs assistance,” Ms Martin said.

“On a busy ward, this bed means we can help patients, prevent falls and ensure a patient’s dignity.”

Kempsey United Hospital Auxiliary president Maxine Walker said the Macleay Valley’s people, organisations and businesses continue to humble her with their generosity.

“We have many people to thank for their donations of time and effort, which enabled us to buy this bed,” Mrs Walker said.

“Our general volunteers, Pink Ladies and UHA members put in a massive effort to support our hospital, and we thank Coastline Credit Union, Lions Club, Rotary West Kempsey, the Walmsley family, Kempsey Heights Bowling Club, Smart Tiles and my neighbours Barry and Sue.”

The UHA’s next fundraiser is a bowls day at Kempsey Heights on 11 November. Gather a team, dress up and roll up to the club for a 12:30pm start.

There will be an auction, raffles, live music, food, and the chance to win the new perpetual trophy in the business house challenge.

Register before 10 November by emailing jenny.clarke@health.nsw.gov.au or phone 6562 0285.
