Need support in managing patients with substance use?

Oct 21, 2024

From October, the MNCLHD Alcohol and Other Drugs service (AOD) will have a full contingent of staff to provide AOD Hospital Consultation Liaison (HCL) services.

HCL provides specialist advice and consultation on the management of alcohol and substance use issues of patients in the emergency department or hospital inpatient settings of our major hospitals.

AOD HCL has a key role in the assessment, withdrawal management advice and discharge planning of drug and alcohol-related hospital presentations. The team also plays a key role in the education and training of the generalist health workforce in alcohol and other drug issues.

A request for a review of a patient by the HCL service can be arranged with the use of e-Order in eMR or via email (Coffs Clinical Network –  MNCLHD-CHHC-CLWDM@health.nsw.gov.au or Hastings Macleay – MNCLHD-HMN-CLWDM@health.nsw.gov.au).

The HCL service is available Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4pm. Patients being discharged or who do not need HCL involvement in their care, they can be provided with our AOD Services Intake Number, 1300 662 263, to contact after discharge to assist them in accessing the outpatient AOD services.

On weekends and after hours, the NSW Drug and Alcohol Specialist Service (DASAS) is available to ED and hospital clinicians for specialist AOD advice.

Drug and Alcohol Specialist Advisory Service (DASAS) is a free 24/7 telephone advisory service that assists health professionals with the clinical diagnosis and management of patients who use alcohol and other drugs.

Call 1800 023 687 for advice on:

  • Management of alcohol and other drug withdrawal states
  • Opioid dependence treatment
  • Treatment of other alcohol and other drug use conditions

You’re encouraged to call DASAS even if you’re not sure the line is right for you as your enquiry will still be directed to the right place.

This service is for health professionals only. Patients seeking information should be directed to the Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS), a free 24/7 confidential telephone service staffed by professional counsellors. The ADIS phone number is 1800 250 015.
