Hospital volunteers ready to celebrate 80 years of service

Aug 20, 2024

The Wauchope branch of the United Hospital Auxiliaries (UHA) of NSW will celebrate its 80th anniversary in September, marking eight decades of dedicated service to the Wauchope community and its hospital.

Formed in 1944, the Wauchope UHA, now known as Wauchope Hospital Volunteers, has a long and proud history of supporting healthcare services in the region.

Originally known as the Wauchope Pink Ladies, this volunteer organisation is one of the oldest in Wauchope. Over the years, the group’s primary focus has been on fundraising for essential medical equipment and patient care items for Wauchope District Memorial Hospital.

Their efforts have helped ensure the hospital remains well-equipped to serve the community.

President Barry Peters expressed his excitement for next month’s celebration, which will bring the community together for a special event at the Wauchope RSL Club on 10 September. The event will honour the rich history of the hospital and the dedicated volunteers who have supported it over the years.

“Wauchope District Memorial Hospital is more than just a healthcare facility; it is a symbol of the community’s resilience, dedication, and commitment to providing care for its residents,” Mr Peters said.

“The hospital has adapted to the changing times while maintaining its focus on delivering accessible and high-quality healthcare to the people of Wauchope and surrounding areas. And we, the Wauchope Hospital Volunteers, have been with it every step of the way.

“The hospital’s history is a testament to the power of community-driven efforts in establishing and maintaining essential public services, and it continues to be a cornerstone of health and wellness in the region. We like to think we’ve made some contribution to that.”

Among the special guests at the luncheon will be recently retired branch president Winn Secombe, who was born in Wauchope 86 years ago. Ms Secombe, a retired registered nurse, has dedicated 25 years of service to the UHA branch, including seven years as president.

She is hoping for a strong turnout from the community to show support for the volunteer group, which is well-known for its monthly fundraising stalls at the Wauchope IGA, a major source of support for the hospital.

The Wauchope UHA invites  members of the community to join in the celebration and acknowledge the lasting impact of their work on the health and well-being of the region.

The luncheon at the Wauchope RSL Club on 10 September starts at 12 noon. Cost is $30 a person with raffles, lucky door prizes< trading table and a guest speaker featuring on the day.

RSVP by 3 September to Winn Secombe 0409 069 116.
