Collaboration delivers support to seniors pursuing better health

Healthy ageing is in the spotlight this month with a range of Seniors Festival activities happening across the Mid North Coast, kicking off with the annual Living Well Expo in Coffs Harbour earlier this month.

The expo, hosted by Blue Sky, provided a platform for local service providers to engage with the community, particularly focusing on older people and people with disabilities and their carers.

The event, featuring about 65 service stalls, aimed to address health outcomes and social connections by offering access to expert speakers and essential services.

The Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Health Promotion team was one of the many service providers who attended and shared information and support to the community on healthy ageing, including information and referral to the Get Healthy telephone coaching service.

Health Promotion Officer Ben McLellan said the Living Well Expo demonstrated the collective commitment of various organisations and the community to support each other in pursuing better health and stronger social ties for older people.

“The collaborative atmosphere and the level of community engagement at the expo really highlighted how such an event can help empower individuals in our community to take charge of their own health and wellbeing,” Ben said.

“This event showed the shared dedication of local services to enhancing the quality of life for older individuals and those with disabilities, and our team was pleased to be a part of it.”

The Health Promotion team also engaged with attendees though surveys, and captured feedback and ideas from the community and stallholders.

These surveys will help identify the health-related initiatives that might be needed in the community for older adults, and to identify the barriers and enablers relating to physical activity, nutrition, and healthcare access, specifically focusing on what older adults require to age healthily.
