Celebrating Fay James’ 55 years of service as a health care worker
Aug 07, 2024In a heartfelt ceremony at Kempsey District Hospital, Registered Nurse Fay James was honoured with her 55-year service badge, a tribute to her remarkable career and dedication as a health care worker.
Despite her busy schedule, Fay was momentarily “pinned down” between patient transfers for a special afternoon tea presentation.
Fay began her nursing journey in 1964 and is approaching an incredible 60 years in the field.
She initially trained on the job within the hospital system and later completed a graduate diploma at university.
Fay joined Kempsey District Hospital 19 years ago and has spent the past 12 years as a Patient Transport Nurse. She ensures patients are safely transferred by road to and from other facilities within the district, often with her trusty partner, Ian Borger, at the wheel.
During the ceremony, Fay shared fascinating stories from her early days as a young nurse, highlighting the significant changes in uniforms, documentation, and the role of Matrons. She recalled the strict but fair environment of the past, where even off-duty nurses followed Matron’s directives. Fay humorously recounted how she was grateful when disposable paper veils replaced the long, starched cloth ones of earlier years.
Jenny Clarke, speaking for everyone who knows and works with Fay, said she was a tremendous asset to the Health District.
“Across the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network, Fay and Ian Borger are known and cherished as a team,” Jenny said.
“Fay’s caring and gentle nature, quick wit, and storytelling abilities endear her to colleagues, patients, and the community alike.
“Congratulations, Fay! We deeply appreciate and love you.”
