The Rural Allied Health Assistant Scholarship provides financial assistance for individuals from a rural area (MM3-MM7) to complete an Allied Health Assistant qualification at TAFE NSW.

About the scholarship

The Rural Allied Health Assistant Scholarship provides financial assistance for individuals from a rural area (MM3-MM7) to complete an Allied Health Assistant qualification at TAFE NSW.

The Scholarship can assist NSW Health employees working in rural settings to upskill or retrain and/or new entrant individuals interested in gaining employment with NSW Health. The applicant can apply for a $3,000 scholarship to complete the Allied Health Assistant qualification and use funds for associated training fees, technology, travel, accommodation or childcare expenses.

Scholarship priorities

These scholarships are limited and competitive. While all eligible applications will be considered, the following applications will be given priority:

  1. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People living in a rural area. The person must be:
    • Of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
    • Identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and
    • Be recognised and accepted by the Aboriginal community in which they live or work.
  2. Current employee of NSW Health who meet Smart and Skilled requirements.
  3. Greater priority to the higher the Modified Monash Model Scale of Rurality location: MM3 (low) – MM7 (high) (find Modified Monash Model (MMM) classifications on the Health Workforce Locator.
  4. Outcome from application assessment.
  5. Demonstrated intention to remain in the rural NSW Health workforce.

Who is eligible?

Allied Health Assistant Scholarship Applicants must:

  1. Be current NSW Health employees with non-clinical or clinical roles or individuals interested in working for NSW Health in a rural setting with intention to work as an Allied Health Assistant or Pharmacy Assistant.
  2. Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and a resident of NSW.
  3. Have resided in a rural or remote area in NSW for a minimum of five consecutive or eight cumulative years since the age of five.
  4. Be seeking to enrol in a full qualification from the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (HLT43021) or the Certificate IV Hospital Health Services Pharmacy Support (HLT47121) or single units delivered by TAFE NSW.
  5. Demonstrate a desire to contribute to the future of health in rural and regional NSW.
  6. Agree to work under the supervision of an allied health professional(s) in one or more of the following allied health areas:

Occupational Therapy

Podiatry

Physiotherapy

Social Work

Pharmacy

Radiography

Dietetics

Audiology

Speech Pathology

Recreation therapy

Exercise Physiology

 

  1. Successful recipients must not have accepted a NSW Health scholarship or subsidy within the last two years.

How to apply

Complete the online application form by midnight Friday 26 April 2024. Late applications will not be accepted.

  1. Applicant Support Letter. If you are a NSW Health employee, upload a letter of support from your current manager or supervisor using the template. If you are not already a NSW Health employee, please provide a letter of support (using the template) from a professional referee regarding your suitability for this career path and potential for work in a rural NSW health setting.
  2. As part of this application, please respond to the following questions and upload your responses in one document:
  • Describe what you hope to achieve by completing this training.
  • Describe the need for and benefit of this training for your current or planned role.
  • Describe how this scholarship will assist you to work or gain employment in a rural setting.
