Core of Life

Core of Life is a program developed by midwives for use by midwives and other health workers to encourage young people to discuss information, to challenge their beliefs and to embrace the concepts of birth, pregnancy and parenting as a normal part of a healthy adult lifestyle.

A large contribution to adolescent’s ideas about pregnancy; child birth and parenting are acquired from the media. Unfortunately this medium can sometimes leave false, frightening and/or often romantic images of pregnancy, birth and parenting to our young people. The Core of Life sessions aim to demystify these images by providing young people with more realistic and ‘normal’ information about pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting.

This is achieved by providing current research based information, in a realistic, innovative and culturally sensitive manner through interactive slides, videos and role play.

The sessions are delivered to year nine students by a midwife and other health professional over a 90 minute timeframe (longer if time permits) to small class sizes (maximum of 20). Several sessions are usually required to accommodate numbers and schools should have appropriate IT to support the program.
