Environmental Health

Environmental health is the interaction between the environment and the health of populations of people. While environmental health is distinct from environmental protection there are overlaps in many areas. Environmental health has been defined as “those aspects of human health determined by physical, biological, and social factors in the environment.”

Environmental health issues include the provision of safe drinking water supplies, recreational use of water, sewage management, public swimming pools, toxicology, microbial control, skin penetration industries, funeral industries, arbovirus control, air quality, waste management, and basic hygiene.

The Environmental Health Team work closely with the community, local councils, other government departments and the Environmental Health Branch of the Ministry of Health to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

The team comprises of two (2) Senior Environmental Health Officers (SEHOs) and three (3) Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) located in both Port Macquarie and Lismore offices of the North Coast Public Health Unit.

The Port Macquarie office serves the local council areas of Hastings, Kempsey, Nambucca, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour City. The Lismore office serves the local council areas of Byron, Ballina, Lismore, Kyogle, Richmond Valley, Clarence Valley and Tweed Shire.
